Director, Clinical Science, Translational Science &
Medicine-Rheumatology to be in Spring House, PA, La Jolla, CA or
Cambridge, MA. The primary focus of the Director, Clinical Science,
within Immunology Translational Science and Medicine (TSM) is to
serve as a "bridge" between the preclinical Discovery Research and
TSM groups into Clinical Development of New Molecular Entities
(NMEs). The Director, Clinical Science, Rheumatology, leads a group
of Clinical Scientists (CS) responsible for designing clinical
studies outlined in the early development plan (EDP) for assets
primarily in rheumatology, including prevalent disease and rare
autoantibody-mediated diseases. The Director, Clinical Science may
function in the role of a Study Responsible Scientist (SRS) on
early development trial teams. The CS team works with Global
Development Operations (GDO) and a cross-functional Trial Teams to
efficiently and effectively operationalize early development
studies. In close collaboration with the Rheumatology Program
Clinical Lead, the Director will drive design of, conduct, and
provide analysis of Experimental Medicine (Phase 0) and
interventional Translational studies. (e.g., First-in-Human Phase
1, Phase 1b and Phase 2a proof-of-concept trials). At its core,
this work is a deep collaboration between Disease Area experts,
Translational Science (Biomarker) experts, Immunologic Pathway
experts and many other essential development functions. TSM is an
integrated group of scientists that includes a biomarkers group and
a clinical group which conducts early clinical development and
experimental medicine studies. Johnson & Johnson Immunology has a
history of bringing life-changing therapies to patients with
immune-mediated diseases. The TSM group will provide the key
learnings/insights on the next wave of novel therapies for these
patients. We are looking for someone with a BS, MS, MD, PharmD, PhD
or RN background, industry experience (early development clinical
trials preferred), and ideally a scientific background in
Immunology and Rheumatology, to join this collaborative research
group, and help us bring these new therapies to patients.
Additional responsibilities are as follows:
- Oversee projects of and manage the career development of a
group of Early Development Clinical Scientists who are executing ED
Rheumatology and autoantibody-mediated clinical studies.
- Collaborate with Discovery Research, Translational Science and
Medicine, Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics, Global
Development Operations (GDO), and others to implement biomarker and
translational research plans for early development programs in
Rheumatology.
- Oversee and drive the implementation of innovative trial
designs including adaptive, platform and basket trials through the
creation and approval of a clinical protocol.
- May help the EDT (Early Development Teams) create the
development strategy for Rheumatology NMEs.
- Represents TSM Trial Team at project functional stage-gate
reviews.
- Operate in a matrixed environment and participate in
cross-functional trial teams.
- Helps to identify and collaborate with consultants,
investigators, and key opinion leaders to optimize the preparation
of early development strategies.
- Participate in the presentation of results and updates of
projects at department, project, corporate and scientific
meetings.
- Participate in identification and implementation of process
improvement / shared learnings (eg, excellence initiatives, group
management of operational processes, ensure best practices sharing)
in TSM as well as through Immunology TA initiatives and
cross-Pharma initiatives, as applicable.
- Active contributor to the CS leadership team responsible for
oversight and improvements in the execution of early development TM
studies and career development of junior Clinical
Scientists.Qualifications:
- BS, MS, MD, PharmD, PhD or RN (or equivalent degrees) with at
least 5 years of industry experience in this or a similar role
preferred.
- Clinical Development experience is required.
- Experience with early development studies (eg, Ph 0, 1 and 2a)
studies is required.
- Experience in immunology and Rheumatology indications is
preferred.
- Experience in managing operational aspects of their teams
(e.g., budget, performance, and compliance), as well as
implementing workforce and succession plans to meet business needs
is required.
- Proven track record in managing people of varying levels and
experience who work within a matrix environment including setting
goals, holding others accountable, managing poor performance, and
developing others to reach their full potential.
- Proven experience leading complex cross functional
teams/workstreams is required.
- Experience with innovative trial designs (adaptive, platform,
bucket) is preferred.
- Ability to survey and interpret the scientific literature
related to the assigned projects is required.
- Working knowledge of the use of Microsoft suite of software
products including Excel and Word is required. Ability to do more
complex data analysis with Excel or similar programs is
preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel, including trans-Atlantic
travel (up to -10%) may be required.
- Interactive team member with strong interpersonal skills. The
ability to advise, persuade, mentor, and negotiate with colleagues
in a supportive and collegial fashion.
- Strong project and time management skills.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work well in a
dynamic environment and be able to prioritize and respond to
changing needs of the business.
- Ability to operate with limited day to day supervision is
required.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. The
anticipated base pay range for this position is $157,000.00 to
$271,000.00The Company maintains highly competitive,
performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines,
this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in
accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual
performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive
to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and
the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year.
Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual
basis. Employees and/or eligible dependents may be eligible to
participate in the following Company sponsored employee benefit
programs: medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short- and
long-term disability, business accident insurance, and group legal
insurance.
- Employees may be eligible to participate in the Company's

- Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year

per calendar year
